20 of the all-time greatest female golfers

Spread the love

With more attention and money up for grabs, the women’s game is becoming more and more competitive with the men’s game. There are many well-known people in history who have contributed significantly to this movement, but who are the best players of all time?

We look at 20 of the greatest female golfers of all time, including some well-known players and historical figures from the sport…

KATHY WHITWORTH

On the LPGA Tour, Kathy Whitworth won an amazing 88 times. Her most successful years were in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to winning six major championships, she was the first American captain of the 1990 Solheim Cup.

MICKEY WRIGHT

Ben Hogan reportedly remarked that Mickey Wright had the greatest stroke he had ever seen. She won ninety times as a professional, with thirteen of those victories being majors, so it appears to have worked as well.

ANNIKA SORENSTAM

72 victories on the LPGA Tour, including 10 Majors, made Sorenstam the first female European player to rule women’s golf. She also won eighteen times abroad. In addition to being the only female golfer to shoot 59, Sorenstam shot to fame in 2003 when she participated in a men’s PGA Tour event for the first time since Babe Zaharias.

LOUISE SUGGS

Suggs was a somewhat consistent player, especially in the 1950s, and was one of the players that assisted in founding the Ladies PGA Tour. For instance, over the decade, she only failed to place among the top three on the season-ending money list once.

BETSY RAWLS

Another player who shone in the 1950s was Betsy Rawls, who won six of her eight Major titles in that decade. Her seasons of 1952 and 1959 are especially notable since, respectively, she won eight and ten times.

JOANNE CARNER

Carner won the US Women’s Open twice and amassed 49 victories in her professional career. However, considering that she placed second in Majors just ten times, this could have been far greater.

SANDRA HAYNIE

Haynie, who was also born in Texas, is the ninth-best player in history with 44 LPGA Tour victories.

PATTY SHEEHAN

Sheehan showed early promise in skiing but switched to golf a year after turning professional in 1980, winning her first LPGA championship. As her playing career came to a close, she had an incredible list of accomplishments that included six Majors, four of which came from her final seven victories on the LPGA Tour.

PAT BRADLEY

In her storied career, Bradley’s best season occurred in 1986, when she captured three of the four Major titles. She only failed to win one tournament that year, the US Women’s Open, when she tied for fifth place.

JULI INKSTER

One of Inkster’s most notable traits is her longevity at the top; her first and last LPGA Tour victories were achieved 23 years apart. After the USA had won two straight events, she helped them reclaim the Solheim Cup from Europe in 2015 by winning seven majors.

SE RI PAK

Pak contributed to the modernization of golf as a game. Naturally, she was a consistent winner, but in 1998, she was the only Korean player on the LPGA Tour; these days, the nation is the dominant force in the sport. It’s generally accepted that her victory in the US Women’s Open in 1998 was the impetus behind the rise in popularity of Korean women’s golf.

DAME LAURA DAVIES

In her prime, Davies was a legendary player in the women’s game and a perpetual winner. She really won at least one Ladies European Tour race every year between 1985 and 2010. That is an impressive career when you consider the 20 LPGA Tour victories and the four Majors. Furthermore, she has made the most appearances (12) and scored the greatest points in the history of the Solheim Cup.

LORENA OCHOA

Though there are a few players who have won more in total than Ochoa, her degree of dominance is commendable given that she won all 27 of her LPGA Tour matches in a five-year span from 2004 to 2009. She only missed six cuts in her whole career.

BETSY KING

King truly reached her zenith in the late 1980s, after a career filled with innumerable victories and multiple Major titles.
